T/S Fay as of midnight 18 August

Well it is looking more and more like Fay maybe visiting us as a Cat 1 or better storm. If you follow Tampa Bay history the worse case scenario for us is to have a storm approach from the mouth of the bay which is exactly what Fay is expected to do. The problem isn’t the winds, it’s the storm surge. Over 3,000,000 people could possibly be affected by this system.

We are currently under a hurricane watch which should be upgraded to a hurricane warning by tomorrow afternoon. All interests in West Central Florida coast need to be watching this storm carefully. Visit our Hurricane Info page HERE and click on Fay to get the latest updates.

Here are some links to other websites and blogs covering the storm. Check em out!!

  • Working On Somthing Fresh And New, Check It Out - Hey Folks, Been working on a whole new theme for my blog over the last several weeks. After all the hoopla with my last web host, the lost of files, and all the security issues I had to deal with, it’s nice to have something organized once again. This site and domain has other plans in the [...]
  • Hurricane Omar Heading For Virgin Islands - October Caribbean Hurricane Omar Alive Omar wasted no time overnight becoming a mid October Caribbean Hurricane. • New Server Host Completed - What A Pain, But The Move Is Almost Done! My painful move over to a new web host is just about completed. The domain and files are all moved over now, and I just need to import all the 600+ archived posts of this blog. While I’m currently trying to get the Stormvideographer Blog back in [...]

  • Hurricane Paloma Forecast - The most recent NHC forecast of Hurricane Paloma from 1 pm today is seen in the graphic below. For fun, I thought I would look at tracks of previous November tropical storms and hurricanes within 100 miles of the current Paloma location which can be seen below. There are 11 tropical storms and hurricanes with tracks in [...]
  • November Tropical Cyclones in the Atlantic - A lot of folks are saying the Atlantic hurricane season is over.  Let us hope that is the case.  However, the graphic below shows 60 tropical storms during the month of November from 1851 to 2007. While November is certainly past the peak of the hurricane season, we can have tropical cyclones in that month.  In [...]
  • Disturbance over NW Caribbean - There is currently a persistent area of low pressure over the northwest Caribbean centered near the coast of Honduras that is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms.  Some computer models show this system developing later in the week and moving generally northeastward toward Florida.  Other models do not show any significant development. The graphic below shows all the [...]
  • October - ?Not Over? - When October rolls around, I recall the old mariner’s poem that attempts to describe the hurricane season like this: June too soon. July stand by. August look out you must. September remember. October all over. The poem was published in “Weather Lore” by R. Inwards in 1898. That description was probably thought to be reasonably accurate over 100 years ago. A [...]
  • Subtropical Storm Laura - The National Hurricane Center has initiated advisories this morning on Subtropical Storm Laura centered over the North Central Atlantic about 1000 miles west of the westernmost Azores.  As expected, this has prompted people to ask for the definition of a “Subtropical Cyclone.”  I will answer by drawing from a blog from 2007. The National Hurricane Operations [...]
  • WISDOM - This afternoon, I observed the release of a specialized weather balloon designed to improve the 3 to 7 day predictions of Atlantic hurricane track and intensity as part of the Weather-In-Situ Deployment Optimization Method (WIDSOM) Project.  The demonstration was held at NOAA’s Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory on Virginia Key.   These specialized balloons will be deployed into data [...]
  • Response to Hurricane Ike - What if the response to Hurricane Ike had been executed perfectly?  Over 1 million people would still have been evacuated, given the uncertainties in forecasting track, intensity and structure.  And even with a perfect forecast, thousands of homes along the upper-Texas and southwest Louisiana coast would still have been destroyed by the storm surge.  Millions [...]
  • The Cost of Hurricane Disasters - My last blog talked about the loss of life associated with Hurricane Ike.  Ike’s economic damage will also be large and is not receiving much media attention.  I suspect that Ike’s economic damage would still be making headlines if it were not for the larger economic crisis on Wall Street.   Preliminary estimates on Ike put the [...]
  • Loss of Life from Hurricane Ike - The Associated Press reports that the death toll from Hurricane Ike in the United States has reached 57 with 23 of them in Texas.  This is regrettable and, in fact, unacceptable.  It will be important to take a close look at where and how the loss of life occurred.  We need to know where and how [...]
  • Learning from the NTSB - Tremendous recovery efforts are continuing as a result of the devastation related to Hurricane Ike.  This is particularly true along the upper-Texas coast and the southwestern coastal sections of Louisiana.  I have no doubt that several official reports will eventually be written on the response and recovery efforts.  These report writers will be well-meaning but, [...]
