I read some very good advice on a YahooTech blog written by Dory Devlin about what we are telling kids to warn them about pedophiles trolling online may not be as helpful as previously thought. Most parents have been advised to warn children not to give out personal information, but that is just the tip of the iceberg. According to the post:

A study published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine finds no evidence that revealing personal information increases chances of being victimized online. Rather, online behavior—what images kids put online, what they say online, how they say it, and whom they say it to—can lead to unwanted sexual solicitation and harassment.

As Nancy Willard, author of Cyber-Safe Kids, Cyber-Savvy Teens said in the AP article on the study, predators don’t need to spend their time piecing together shards of personal information when there are plenty of teens posting sexually provocative photos and engaging in risky behavior in online communication.
