Tired of Republican and Democrat? A Case for a Third Party
Published by The Tampa Pirate September 2nd, 2006 in GovernmentThe elections are coming up and as usual the two main parties are at it again. I have been home recovering from a car wreck I was in a few months ago and in the past month almost 80% of the phone calls we receive in our home have been from the RNC asking me either for (1) money for "insert politicians name here" campaign or for some PAC, (2) polls to see what issues are more important to me or which candidate I am going to vote for or (3) pre-recorded messages from said candidates telling me why not to vote for their competitors. I have friends who are Democrats who receive the same calls from their party.
It doesn't take phone polls and my money to see what the problem with the two parties are. They have both lost their way and are now controlled by rich aristocrats who are aligned with corporations and special interest groups. We are a necessary evil to them. Without us they can't get into power so they come down from their thrones around election time to tell us why we shouldn't vote for their competitors, but they never really explain why we should vote for them.
The idea originally set out by our forefathers was for Joe Anybody to be able to run and get elected serve his term and then return to normal life. Now it is a career path. The amount of money it takes to run anything other than a local election prevents most of us from being able to run. The ones that do run receive major contributions from PAC's and Corporations. So what is the payoff to the corporations? An ally in congress or if they are even luckier, the Presidency.
Both parties are terrorised by the thought that a viable third party candidate could enter the race. This tells me that a third party is a great idea. The calls from America are getting louder for just that. Election Supevisors are seeing as high as a 15% jump in people who are changing their affiliation to "NPA" I think I may be next. It is the only way to send the message that we are no longer going be ruled by only two parties with such narrow views, we are a more diverse country than that. We are a country of people who can think for themselves when they are forced to. Once we stop allowing ouselves to be spoon-fed from the corporate controlled media, and we begin thinking and learning for ourselves will we be able to break the chains of oppression. If we don't do it soon we will begin living George Orwell's chilling vision where everything we eat, drink, see, read, feel and think is controlled by Big Brother.
